The 1919 Black Sox Match-Fixing Scandal
The 1919 Black Sox scandal remains one of the most infamous episodes in sports history. Eight players from the Chicago White Sox were accused of intentionally losing the World Series after conspiring with professional gamblers in exchange for money. Although the players were later acquitted in court due to lack of evidence, Major League Baseball took a firm stance to protect the integrity of the game. All eight players were permanently banned from professional baseball for life. The scandal outraged fans and raised serious concerns about gambling’s influence on sports. As a consequence, baseball introduced the role of the Commissioner with sweeping powers to prevent corruption, setting a precedent for how modern sports leagues handle integrity and discipline.
