The Tardigrade: The Toughest Animal on Earth

Liam James Log by: Liam James
The tardigrade, also known as the “water bear,” is one of the most resilient creatures ever discovered. Despite being less than one millimeter long, it can survive conditions that would instantly kill almost any other life form. Tardigrades are capable of withstanding extreme heat, freezing temperatures near absolute zero, intense radiation, crushing pressure, and even the vacuum of outer space. When conditions become hostile, they enter a dormant state called cryptobiosis, during which their metabolism nearly stops. In this state, they can survive for years—or even decades—without water or food. Scientists have revived tardigrades after exposure to space, extreme dehydration, and radiation levels hundreds of times higher than what humans can endure. Their extraordinary survival abilities have made them a key subject in research related to space travel, astrobiology, and long-term life preservation.
